6 Things to do this Winter that don’t cost Money

I don’t know about you, but for me, the middle and end of Winter can be kind of a dreary time. And a lot of times, when I’m dreary, I get the urge to go shopping for a new spring outfit or 5.

But this year I am really trying to be more intentional about my personal spending, particularly in the wardrobe department. Don’t worry, I still have plenty of ideas on how to keep a fashion blog alive while not really buying clothes. I’m currently on day 45 without buying clothes. OK- I bought 2 pairs of socks and 2 nursing undergarments (which combined cost $5) but I’m not counting those 🙂

With a house remodel wrapping up and becoming a mom, I’ve realized how little I actually need when it comes to clothes- for over 6 months I’ve been living on about a quarter of my actual wardrobe. My style has for sure changed, and a big closet clean out will definitely be happening in the spring.

So here are 6 things that don’t cost money to fill some of those dreary Winter days – I’d also love your ideas in the comments!

Watch an old movie. If you don’t have the TCM channel, check out your local library. They are a great FREE resource for old movies.

My top three picks:

  1. Good Morning, Miss Dove
  2. The Man Who Knew To Much
  3. Bringing Up Baby

Give yourself an at home facial and/or manicure. Chances are, you have received at some point some sort of eye or face mask as a gift. Dig that thing out, wash your face (winter is a great time to get on a daily skin regimen anyways) and slap on those eye patches while you watch a movie, or do the dishes, or clean out your junk drawer. OR Sit down and paint your nails. I always feel better putting a cheery color on my nails. Borrow colors from your friends if you’re lacking in the color you want! I have a tutorial HERE on how to do DIY gel manicures.

Clean out your closet (or your husbands, or your kids, or your moms?). If you haven’t already, do a closet clean out. I have a post on how to do this HERE. If you have, go help a friend or your mom. It is always fun for me to help other people clean things out. I don’t have sentimental attachment to things and you can give them fresh perspective on things they have. Every season, I help my mom go through her stuff and put together outfits with the things she already owns. This one could even make you money, if you decide to list things on Poshmark!

Read your bible. Even if it’s a chapter a day, this is a great time to get into a routine. I need to be better about this. I have a verse sent to me every morning. It helps to read it on my phone as a start to the day. I’ve also been trying to learn more hymns, they help Abner calm down when he’s fussy, so if I can’t be reading, I try to be singing praises.

De-clutter your kitchen. Go through your pots and pans and all the kitchen gadgets. Make a donate pile, a give to friend pile, and re-organize the rest. You could do this over a few days. Pick one section at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed. Another money making opportunity- list china or unused appliances on Facebook marketplace to make a quick few bucks!

Paint something. Whether it’s a piece of furniture, a statement wall in a room, or a blank canvas, chances are you have a half gallon or two of leftover paint sitting in your basement. I’ve seen some really cool DIY canvas paintings lately and I love seeing furniture transformations, in particular, bathroom vanities. My next paint project is painting a bathroom vanity we picked up off the side of the road with the leftover paint I have from our master bedroom refresh last summer. Stay tuned for that transformation!

  1. Oh you know I love old movies! And I appreciate that you mentioned borrowing from the library. Often, libraries have downloadable movies you can stream as well! Cary Grant is my absolute fave. There’s nothing like a Saturday cleaning closets, boxing up donations, while an audiobook plays or Cary Grant’s on in the background.
