How To Be a More Conscious Shopper

Can I Style this in 3-4 ways?

I have done a lot of posts about how to get the most use out of single pieces in your closet. See how I styled a denim skirt 10 ways here, and this dress 3 ways, here!

My main goal on Modest Blondie is to encourage women to shop their own closets and be confident in their outfits without showing everything off.

When you’re shopping, do you ask yourself how many ways an item can be styled? Asking this question can stop impulse purchases and trendy purchases that won’t last.

Will I Wear this 15-20 times?

This question is a hard one for me- now that I’ve been tracking my “wears” on the stylebook app for over a year- I came to a grim realization of just how little I wear a lot of my clothes! I figured out that shoes, jackets, and purses are my most “repeated” items and I can definitely justify paying a little bit more for those items. I also learned that J.Crew and Madewell are my most purchased brands. Tracking my closet allows me to think twice about purchasing something I might already have- and asking “will I wear this at least 15 times” gets me to put things back on the shelf much more and avoid “1x wear purchases”.

I definitely recommend the StyleBook app for iPhone users and there is a similar app available for Android called GlamOutfit!

Whenever possible – THRIFT IT!

You probably knew this was coming- but it’s so true! Purchasing clothing secondhand is the best way to keep clothes out of the landfills and give garments new life! It also allows for purchasing higher quality pieces at better prices. I think thrift shopping has really turned me off to buying cheaper brands at retail prices because I know the quality won’t be as good as a gently used higher end brand.

I hope this gives you an idea of how to be a more conscious shopper! What is your favorite way to make conscious purchases? Let me know in the comments!

XOXO – Taylor

  1. Good suggestions! I think also really knowing what your style is can help reduce the amount of things you buy but don’t end up wearing. I buy almost all my clothes second hand and it’s so easy to just load a cart full of things that I don’t really LOVE just because it’s cheap. Hey, maybe identifying your personal style could be a future blog post. 😉

    1. Definitely! Thanks for mentioning that, Hannah! I like the idea of a blog post on personal style- thanks for the suggestion 🙂

  2. I still haven’t used any kind of closet/wardrobe app like that but I can imagine it would be so helpful! I definitely try to ask myself if I think I will actually wear something , like I try to go ahead and think of an outfit idea in the store! I don’t want to get home and realize that I have nothing to go with it or have no idea what to wear with it…ha! 😉
