5 Things Thrifting is NOT

1. Inexpensive does NOT equal low quality.

The first thought of thrifting may be “cheap”. But just because you don’t pay much for an item doesn’t mean the quality is cheap. Honestly 98% of my designer and higher quality pieces were purchased secondhand for very little. Typically the only reason I can purchase (and justify) designer is because I thrift it!

PAIGE Denim Santa Monica Flare – Retails $199.00… thrifted for $7.50

Coach Swagger Handbag – Retails for $495.00… thrifted for $30.00

2. You’re NOT taking away clothes from someone less fortunate.

I’ve heard people say that they don’t want to shop at Goodwill because there are people that need those clothes more. But what they don’t realize is that the money they spend there goes straight back into their mission of helping people prepare for, find and retain employment. Plus, have you been inside Goodwill? There is plenty to go around.

3. If you know what you’re looking for, thrifting is NOT time consuming.

While yes, the more often you thrift the more you find, it is not necessary to go to the thrift store every week to successfully find pieces you love. Know WHEN to go is half the battle. Sign up for emails and follow them on social media to know when the sales are.

4. Thrifting is NOT just for “skinny people”.

I can’t count how many times someone has said to me that “they don’t have my size at the thrift store” or “I can never find anything that cute in my size!”. Every thrift store and consignment shop I know of has carried all sizes and typically have an exclusive section of plus size items. Also, many store like this are practically begging for these sizes so if you want to consign them- you’re pretty much guaranteed they will take your items! (Clothes Mentor is a good one to check out!)

5. Thrifting does NOT mean “dirty”.

While yes, you should sanitize and wash your clothes when you go to Goodwill, consignment shops and online secondhand market places allow you to comfortably “thrift” and not feel dirty. Have you tried thredUP or Poshmark yet? I order so many pieces from them- and they areĀ  delivered to my front door ready to wear!

Did this help bust some thrifting myths for you?

XOXO – Taylor
