The Athleisure Trend – Yay or Nay?

Hey Girls,

So how do we feel about the “Athleisure” trend that has taken the world by storm the last couple of years?

If you’re not familiar with this term- it’s basically a style that consists of wearing cute workout clothes out and about without any intention of working out. LOL.

It’s been a hard trend for me to jump on the band wagon with because:

1. Usually these styles are immodest (a.k.a- leggings being worn as pants)

2. I just feel like I look sloppy every time I attempt this look.

Also, is it illegal to mix brands? Like you always see people in all Nike, or all Adidas. What if I mix the two? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Will I swiftly be arrested by the athleisure police?

So, it’s taken me a while, but I found a kinda cute, acceptable to me, outfit that I would consider wearing out of the house with no intention of working out….

These joggers are super comfy, and I paired them with this high-low top that I scored a consignment shop. These shoes I actually bought to wear with jeans and if I ever figured out a worthy “athleisure” outfit. (I don’t actually run in Nike’s to be honest).

What do you think? Is it sloppy (I know my hair is, don’t pay attention to that part LOL).

I feel like this is some of the best modest “athleisure” I’ve come up with yet. I did write a post on a pair of joggers a while back, and gave an example of styling them for traveling here

Joggers – They come in 4 colors and sizes xs-xxl. They do run small. I am wearing a medium for reference.

Similar Top (On super sale right now!)- I couldn’t find my exact top because it’s probably older. I feel like even a crew neck sweatshirt would look cute with this. I’m just so short I feel like I start looking sloppy realllll fast.

Rose Gold Nikes – These are still available! But I feel like low-top converse would also be cute with this look. And I promise I won’t arrest you for brand mixing 😛

So what is the prognosis? Are you a YAY or NAY person on the athleisure situation?

I’m still on the fence… like I’m a YA-NAY. (LOL).

How do we feel about incorporating the jogger into a business casual work outfit?

I grabbed these like-new joggers off of ThredUP and I do like them in this outfit, but the elastic still makes me feel a bit sloppy. Am I doing something wrong? HAH! Any suggestions are welcome! 🙂

I think it’s worth mentioning that the casual look above is definitely a great modest option for working out too! I’ve had a lot of people read my modest workout post from a couple of years ago more recently (and I even re-read it!) so I hope this is helpful!

And while I have ya here… I just wanted to say thank you so much for following along and supporting me for almost THREE YEARS! I can’t believe it’s been that long already, but I so enjoy doing this and I always welcome your feedback, post suggestions, and questions.

I read this quote yesterday and it really resonated with me. It really is true, and I hope you will think of this quote when you get frustrated with trying to dress modestly, even though many people don’t think twice about it (especially in the warm months!!).

keep on keeping on, girlies!

  1. You do NOT look sloppy in your work/profesh joggers! They look awesome. The other set of joggers, well, you probably feel like they are too “leisure” and not enough “athletic” because of the big Nike emblem on the hip. I also think if they were longer you’d feel more pulled together. But it’s not a bad look for a day of running errands or being really busy doing stuff. It is very modest (no leggings or form-fitting tanks), and the black and white helps dress it up. I think it’s harder to be modest with this trend because you want to keep your pants looser for modesty, but it’s hard to find a top that is not too baggy to keep from looking sloppy. Know what I mean? Gotta make at least one part of your ensemble more form-fitting, but not too tight. So hard! Keep going for the trend, Taylor! You’re adorable as always.

    1. Aw thanks, Bethany! I’m glad I don’t look sloppy in the professional outfit (because I already wore it to work LOL) and I totally know what you mean about the baggy pants/loose shirt thing! It’s hard to find the right combo! Thanks for the feedback!!

  2. When you mentioned this on Instagram the other day, I thought this is what you were talking about! lol I know it’s tempting to say YAY because athletic wear is the comfiest, easiest looking thing to wear! But I agree with you that it’s not usually modest, and it can look frumpy! I feel like it’s not as bad as wearing pajamas, but I still don’t think I would go for it! That’s just me 😉 I know like with an athletic skirt, it looks a little more put together than just leggings or sweatpants, so I might would wear something like that traveling or something? But I’m still old fashioned and like to dress up nice when I go out! lol
