Dry Shampoo – The Good, The Bad & The Holy Grail

Hilo!!!

So, today’s post is a little different than the norm. I hope you don’t mind a beauty post here and there. I had a request for a post on Dry Shampoo. This isn’t a sponsored post or anything- just my humble opinion and experiences with different brands.

I like to think of myself as the dry shampoo queen (modest, I know), but really- I use it A LOT (probably too much). But who has time to wash, dry, and style there hair every other day?! Not I! And I don’t have the kind of hair that I can just leave wet and it looks gorgeous when it dries, or that can pull off a wet top knot. Nope. No. Never. So, dry shampoo is a morning rush savior!

I’ve been using it for several years now. My mom actually got me started on it. She would buy the TRESeme fresh start dry shampoo at Wal-Mart and let me use it. It’s actually a pretty good drug store brand. And if you wash your hair every other day or every two days, then this is a great option. Any longer and you’ll start to itch. Which let’s be honest, is kinda gross. Ha! It’s only $5!

To me, the best bang for your buck is Batiste. You can get it at pretty much any major retailer for a great price and there is usually some type of BOGO sale. I’ve tried the “bare” one because I don’t like a weird scent and the “brilliant blonde” one and like them both. The blonde one has temporary color in it so you can cover up your roots. Don’t worry- it washes right out and I had no issues with it. but you definitely want to wash your hair the next day after using this. It also comes in “divine dark” and “beautiful brunette”. One of my brunette friends says it’s a life saver!

One brand that I recommend NOT trying is KMS. I tried this when I had a coupon and such at Ulta but did not like it and ended up returning it. I honestly didn’t feel like it did anything. at all. It was expensive and ineffective πŸ™

Big Sexy Hair has a pretty good one… but to me, if you are willing to spend $18 on a bottle of dry shampoo… you might as well go the extra mile and get an even better product (for $5 more). Plus I hate buying this brand because of the name LOL. But all of that aside, I do think this is a good dry shampoo plus it adds volume and who doesn’t need some of that?

Living Proof Dry Shampoo is one of my absolute favorites and has been for over a year. It smells good and it actually CLEANS YOUR HAIR. So I was sold even at the large price tag of $22. It lasts. Honestly, it does. And when Ulta would give out 20% off coupons or offer 5x’s the points, that’s when I would buy πŸ™‚

Now I do love Living Proof’s Dry Volume Blast as well. I use this on my clean and dirty hair for a bit of poof and it is especially effective when you are teasing your hair!

Not Your Mothers. I have never personally tried this brand but when I was in Ulta over the holidays with a couple of my besties, it was on sale for like 3 bucks and I asked them if they’d tried it before… their response: “Meh- you get what you pay for”. SO- I passed. In my opinion, spend a couple more bucks for the Batiste or TRESeme.

Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo. This is a powder spray and the spray part is new to me. The old version didn’t have a spray nozel but I found it on the clearance rack at Ulta for like $12 so I decided to try it. I like it. And if you are a fan of say, baby powder to freshen up your hair, maybe opt for this one!

And now…. the holy grail (in my opinion of course):

Dry Bar Detox Dry ShampooΒ is my new favorite. It’s $23 (sad face) but again, I wait for those coupons! It smells so good and it is so effective. I can use it multiple days in a row (and it doesn’t make your head itchy after just one use!). I’ve been able to wear my hair down on days where I definitely shouldn’t have been able to- haha! (I only wash my hair like 2x’s a week).

I like to mix three of dry bar’s products actually. If I curl my hair on day one, I usually will spray Dry Bar Triple Sec into my hair on day two, fluff, and I can wear it down. Then on day three, I apply the dry bar detox dry shampoo and can style some sort of cute bun or top knot. If I work out in between somewhere, but don’t want to wash my hair, I’ll spray the detox conditioner into my hair, pull it up, shower, then brush it out. The next day I will use the detox dry shampoo again.

If I had to pick just two of these three, I would say go for the dry shampoo and triple sec, and just one… the dry shampoo, hands down.

Do you use dry shampoo? If so- what brand is your favorite?

  1. I like be the dry bar detox dry shampoo for brunettes. Covers gray roots, smells wonderful, and adds great volume for my fine hair. Love the beauty posts.

  2. I love how you review products! You give me the info I want, answering the questions I would ask πŸ˜‰ I love dry shampoo but have only tried a couple, and probably have never spent more than $5. Right now I’m using Dove refresh + care. It works fine, I might try treseme or bastiste next now that you said you like them. I see the Bastiste go on sale on amazon every so often. Thanks!

    1. I’m so glad, Bekah! I appreciate the info! I was just looking at the Dove refresh- it has gotten pretty good reviews on ulta.com! Thanks for stopping by! πŸ™‚

  3. I have never used dry shampoo. I have oily hair and just HAVE to wash every day. But since you’re such a big fan, I might have to try one of the cheaper brands sometime and see how it goes. My hair is too short to pull up, so it had better be a great cover-up for greasy roots. Haha

    1. I did too, Bethany. It took some time to train my hair to not wash it every day but dry shampoo definitely helps in that process!

  4. I’m going to stick up for the Not Your Mother’s brand and say that their Beach Babe texturizing shampoo is my favorite dry shampoo so far!I liked it a lot better than the Batiste ones I’ve tried; however, I’ve tried the Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak, and it is so-so, like your friends said.
