How To: Remove Old Coffee Stains from your Clothes

Let me guess what you are thinking right now- just from reading the title of this post… “She’s speaking from experience”.

YEPPP!

OK, this is like super embarrassing and really not like me- but I was shopping at Nordstrom Rack (the actual store… it’s super cool) anyways, I had coffee because morning time duh… and I couldn’t hold all of the THINGS. So I went and got this super awesome cart that you hang things on and you can put stuff in the buggy AND there was a cup holder… SCORE.

Ok, well, in the areas where the clothing racks are in the store, there is like a little ledge and you go from tile to a carpeted area. I pushed my cart onto the carpeted area, my coffee spilled out a little… OK ALOT on to this gorgeous shirt I had sitting in the buggy compartment! Ughhh, I was so sad! There wasn’t another one because it was a clearance rack find and morally speaking I felt kind of obligated to buy it now that I spilled coffee all over it (LOL- I was a mess).

So I was like “oh well, it will wash right out”.

WRONG.

I threw it in the wash when I got home thinking all would be well (no I didn’t spot clean it. no I don’t know why), then when I went to transfer it to the dryer I saw the tag said dry clean only … of course. But it’s 100% polyester so no harm was done. I just layed it flat to dry.

Anyways, I went to throw it on Friday morning and the spots are still there!!

Disclaimer I did wear the shirt because I put a blazer over the spill at the top and I tucked it in enough so you couldn’t see the stain in the front (LOL) Seriously this is not like me.

So, I did some research on how to remove old dried on coffee stains from polyester and cotton.

What you’ll need:

Shaving cream

A white wash cloth or white paper towels (to avoid color transfer)

The spot at the top right is the worst but there were a few other places the coffee spilled too…

First, blot the spot with warm water:

Second, rub the shaving cream into the fabric with a another section of the garment and with your fingers.

Then, with a clean white towel, blot the shaving cream out and let it air dry. I had to do the big spot twice but this did work.

After the spots dried and I was sure the stains were out, I filled my kitchen sink with cool water and submersed the shirt until it was fully saturated to make sure there was no shaving cream left in the fabric. Then, I let it air dry!

Wah-lah! Good. As. New.

This is also supposed to work on carpet, and if this doesn’t do the trick, another, more aggressive option is to mix baking soda with warm water into a paste and rub it into the garment, let it dry and then rinse it out.

I hope this has been helpful!!

Have you ever had this kind of thing happen? (hehe)

keep on keeping on…

  1. That’s awesome! That would have been terrible if you had wound up with a shirt with a stain that wouldn’t come out, so therefore, a shirt you couldn’t wear lol

  2. Dummy, ne, I started the coffee pot and forgot to put the pot under it. I had a real mess to clean up. I did not know the coffee had run into my linen drawer and stained some beautiful old napkins I have. I would like to get the stain out. I will try the shaving cream and let you know.
