Your Poshmark Questions Answered!

Hi Friends,

Today I want to answer some questions about Poshmark that I have been asked over the past year or so.

I sell my clothing mainly on Poshmark, and if it’s not sold there, I typically will take it to Clothes Mentor or Plato’s Closet to get cash fast and free up space.

I am NOT a “re-seller”. I don’t buy clothes just to turn around and make a profit. So, that being said… this is a nice segway into one question I’ve been asked…

Q: Do you have to pay taxes?

I think it depends.

I do believe if you are a re-seller full or part time you need to claim that income.

For me, I have not felt like I need to do this because I sell my own items, and occasionally some of my mom’s or husband’s stuff purely to get rid of it. It is rare that I make money on an item. I think of it as an online yard sale. I also typically just use the money I earn on Poshmark to buy things on Poshmark. It’s kind of my shopping fund. So I keep the money “in the system” if you will. The other cool thing is that Poshmark now charges State income tax on purchases. So you don’t have to claim any thing on taxes for purchases you make because you pay the state tax of wherever you are buying an item from at purchase time.

Q: How do you calculate shipping?

You don’t have to! Poshmark does ALL THE LEG WORK for you, and the buyer pays for shipping.

After the buyer purchases an item, the shipping label is emailed directly to you. Just print it off and slap it on a box.

Q: Where do you get boxes for shipping?

USPS offers free priority shipping boxes and bags. You can have them delivered directly to your home. Just make an USPS account and add boxes/bags to your cart. You don’t even have to put a credit card in to order!

You can also find boxes and bags at the post office. I use a combination of USPS priority boxes and I try to recycle boxes that come to me as long as they are in good shape.

Q: What happens if the item I sell doesn’t fit the buyer?

You are not responsible for an item not fitting the buyer. It is up to the buyer to ask as many questions as necessary before purchasing. As the seller, I recommend providing measurements and if possible, screenshots of the product or a photo of you wearing it.

Q: Is it sketchy?

No! Poshmark has a “guarantee” called Posh Protect. You can also read seller reviews before purchasing an item in the “about” section of their closet.

These are the big questions I’ve been asked so I hope that this insight helps you! If you have any more questions, drop them in the questions below!

  1. Great info, Taylor! The tax thing was definitely something I was curious about at first. I know claiming taxes varies from state to state. For example, in Tennessee, I can resell up to around $4,000 before I legally need to claim the money in tax space. They sure don’t make it simple, so they? Haha!

    1. I agree! I just do it to get rid of the stuff I don’t wear. And I just confirmed via an excel spreadsheet that I didn’t “make” any money on sales last year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ LOL!

  2. Soo helpful Taylor! I am wondering if you could do a post on best tips and tricks for selling on Poshmark! I am a casual seller and I feel like it’s so hard to even sell one item when I compete with re-sellers! I have so many questions!! How do you price your items? What brands or types of items sell best? How do you deem something worthy to sell on Poshmark vs. donating or taking to a place like Plato’s?
    Teach me your ways!!! haha

  3. I’m definitely planning on selling some of my items on Poshmark soon! I love how simple they make the shipping process. That’s a relief! I’m curious to how it will go…I may decide to do it again in the future, and I also may decide it’s not worth it…we’ll see!
