How To Get Maximum Use of your Sweaters

If you’re anything like me, you love sweaters. But also, you get caught up in how cute ALL THE SWEATERS are and you end up with A LOT, which means less wears per sweater.

Many sustainability advocates push for the 30 wears campaign. This challenge is to make consumers think before purchasing an item and ask “will I wear this at least 30 times?”. That’s A LOT of wears people. Especially for sweaters, because they can’t be worn all year.

So recently, one morning before work I knew I wanted to wear a sweater, but also it was a Wednesday, which means Bible Class after work. So I try to wear a dress or skirt on Wednesday’s so it’s easier in case I’m short on time.

I had seen another blogger layer a super cute turtleneck sweater over top of a dark a-line dress on Instagram a couple days earlier and I decided to try and re-create the look.

I ended up sifting through my two baskets of sweaters that morning looking for the perfect fit. I listed 2 sweaters on my Poshmark closet in the process because I realized I only wore them 1 time each in the last year or so, and some how they had made it through multiple purges.

It got me thinking about how little my sweaters actually get worn, and so, this blog post was born.

Below are 5 unique ways you can style a sweater, and the bonus is, the layering pieces used in these outfits are not necessarily fall/winter items. So this allows you to get use out of some of your warm weather clothes in the process.

Add a basic sweater over top a midi dress and belt it- easy peasy!

For a warmer look that maybe allows you to skip a jacket- add a sweater over a plaid flannel or button down.

Chunky knit sweaters also go great over top of shorter dresses- pair with opaque back tights for a chic yet easy look.

Use your sweater as your coat, by layers over a thin turtleneck and under a thick flannel button down.

Add interest to your basic sweaters by adding a vest. Both looks are cute, but to get more use of the same sweater, adding a simple vest changes the look up drastically!

I hope this gives you a few fresh ideas for getting more use of the sweaters already in your wardrobe 🙂

  1. Such great ideas, Taylor! I would never think of layering a sweater over a dress, but it looks so cute. I like to layer a turtleneck under an A-line midi skirt. It’s easy and cozy!
    Thanks for this great post!

      1. Love your outfit with the turtleneck+sweater+flannel! Definitely going to try to recreate that with what I have! My most common sweater lewk is to tuck just the front into a high-waist skirt or pants. I believe the kids call it a french tuck

        1. Thanks, Hannah! I love the tuck on other people, I think I’m too short to pull it off LOL Your go-to look sounds like it’s the cutestttt!

  2. I layer sweaters over dresses all the time and when I do, I get a ton of compliments on my “skirt”. It’s funny how people don’t realize it’s a dress hiding under there! I’ve also been known to layer a skirt over another dress…

  3. I have seen people wearing sweater over their dresses and I definitely want to try this sometime! Also, I love the idea of thinking, will I wear this 30 times. That just may be something I need to incorporate in decision-making for future purchases!
