How To: Style a Graphic Tee with a Skirt

Hi ladies!

Today’s post was inspired from an Instagram post about two weeks ago. I styled a jean skirt with a Cleveland Cavaliers t-shirt and converse. I asked if a post on how to pair skirts with graphic tees would be useful and the response was a gigantic YES!

So without further adieu…

The Jean Skirt:

Pair it with:

  • A medium weight cotton tee and converse or Adidas sneaks
  • Any color top (assuming your denim skirt is a reasonable shade)
  • Half tuck – how to:
    • Start with the shirt completely untucked.
    • Grab the bottom middle with your thumb and pointer finger.
    • push straight down where your zipper lays on the skirt.
    • Fluff out as needed – may need to roll the back up a bit depending on how fitted or non-fitted the tee is.

My sweet mama agreed to help me with this post 🙂 She is wearing a jean skirt that she made with a Yosemite T-shirt, half-tucked and ADORABLE wedges, right? 😉

The Maxi Skirt:

Pair it with:

(Depending on the thickness of the skirt, the top will vary…)

  • Thin maxi skirts should be worn with a slip to cover bumpys and then you should tuck in a lightweight cotton tee and blouse it out a tad.
  • The black skirt I’m wearing below is really thin. I found a knee length slip with the tags still on it at Goodwill for like $2.50. The top I’m wearing is lightweight and is pretty petite so I could easily tuck it in and not have lumps at my waist.
  • Thicker tops can be worn with a heavier weight maxi, but keeping the top thin is always a good way to keep bulkiness down.
  • If the skirt is patterned, pick a mainly neutral colored top with bold, simple lettering
  • If the skirt is plain you can play up the top or just go with a neutral for a more classic yet thrown together look.
  • Wear flats, flops, or sneaks. I went with the converse again 🙂

We took one of my Dad’s Buckeyes shirts, rolled the sleeves and my mom tucked it in. Adding an infinity scarf gave this look a fun spin too 🙂

The A-Line skirt:

Pair it with:

  • A thin to medium weight top that is not overly bulky or long
  • Depending on how the skirt’s waist is, you may be able to get away with a long top, but you don’t want the bottom half of the shirt to show bumps when it is tucked in.
  • Flip flops or flats would be a good choice with this skirt.
  • Don’t pick a skirt that is too dressy or with much a ‘sheen’. Something simple and/or cotton, looks best.
